Famed for it's crystal clear waters and peaceful atmosphere, pupu springs in Golden Bay is a wahi tapu ( sacred place ) to the manawhenua iwi of Golden bay. In addition local people respect this natural resource as a taonga ( treasure ) to be protected and enjoyed. However Pupu springs has become increasingly popular for Scuba diving, snorkeling and swimming. This has been with an inevitable impact on the springs unique atmosphere and ecology, and on the experience of other non-diving visitors. Accordingly the D.O.C. has developed guide lines and a code of conduct for Pupu springs in order to better control diving activities and to stop swimming in the springs.

The code of conduct has been developed in consultation with various interested parties including dive clubs, it will remain in place whilst the DOC considers the code and its benefits, it monitors compliance and gathers more information on the ecological and social effects of diving on this unique environment. Take responsibility for protecting and conserving the sacredness of the area by protecting the environment both in and out of the water.
